Why People Procrastinate + A Prescription for Procrastinators, from The Feeling Good Handbook.

why people procrastinate

Do you intentionally & habitually put things off?

Why do you think that is?

Is it lack of motivation or, do you just not feel like doing specific tasks?

The Feeling Good Handbook, Book
I shared my thoughts on this huge book here. So, I’m not reviewing it so much as discussing a few chapters that have particularly caught my interest. Like, Chapter 9: Why People Procrastinate, and Chapter 10: A Prescription for Procrastinators.

Chapter 8 (Cognitive Therapy in Action: How to Break Out of a Bad Mood) was the first chapter I covered. If you missed it, you can read up here!

Cognitive therapy methods for common bad moods

Inferiority. Insecurity. Irritability. Frustration. Guilt. Stress.

Have you ever felt these feelings before?

Grab a nice cup of coffee. Or tea. ‘Tis a rather long, but hopefully helpful post!

Shark Tank + What’s Your Business?

shark tank tv

Shark Tank, TV

Over the Winter break, my brother-in-law got us hooked on this show.

We are catching up, watching the previous seasons.

It’s interesting. The people that come on. The ideas. The businesses that are built on great ideas, with seemingly good people running them.
Success stories.

Inspiring & entertaining stuff!

There’s something to be learned about presentation & negotiation. And, Mr. Wonderful…is wonderful!

Do you watch?

Refresh & Keep Going!

I’ve noticed that so many of us have dreams. Goals. Great things that we want to do, in our hearts, with our lives.

Just the thought of it, makes us feel happy. But. We are scared. Hesitant to take any action.

When we do (finally) take that first step. Maybe we take another. And another. But then, something happens. We don’t finish.

Our goal is stuck. Still loading. Incomplete.

How do we feel then?

Maybe disappointed. Frustrated with ourselves. Wondering, what the heck happened? How’d something so important, end up on the back burner?

Well…I’m here today to urge you to pick it up!

If there’s dust…or even cobwebs, brush it off. Kill any running spiders. Wipe it down. Hit F5. Refresh. And. continue! Keep going until you see the end of that thing.

Whatever it is. It’s important to you, no? You think about it often. You want it to be so great. Because you care so much. Don’t let the fear that it might not be “perfect” halt your execution. Don’t let the enormity of it overwhelm you.

You can do it…you will do it! Don’t let minute things get in your way. Stop doing those things that don’t matter. And, start doing the things that do. You know what they are.

Now. GO!

The Chicago Marathon.

26.2 miles!

I’m so happy for the both of them! Husband & his brother both finished the marathon, and took home medals. The event ran out of medals to give, but were suppose to be mailing them out when more came in.

As a spectator, the marathon is so inspiring to watch! There are moments when you’re cheering from the sidelines, a big group of runners go by, and you just want to jump in & join ‘em. Especially, when they’re wearing tutus!

Kick 6 butts!

Well, some songs just make you want to, anyway.

No worries, I’m not talking about fighting (real) people.

Just that there are times when I absolutely dread doing tasks, that I simply must do. I put them off for as long as I can stand it. But it always bothers me that they are there in the first place. Waiting.

There are a ton of musical selections, that help me “get to it”.

When listened to, I envision myself in the ring, with the biggest…most aggravating…most incessant, “Goliath”.

He has 6 butts.

And yes, I kick them all.

Any songs help you kick fictitious butt & get stuff done?

What do you want to experience in life?

What do you really want to experience in your life?

This sole question is what I took away from reading The 4-Hour Workweek. I’d recommend this book for inspiration, more than it’s practical advice.

Although it’s a very motivating, thought-provoking read; filled with uncommon ideas about work and sprinkled with info on how to free up your personal time (i.e., hire a personal assistant overseas to read/reply to your emails, &/or negotiate with your manager/boss so that you can complete your entire week’s work on Monday & Tuesday, to take off the rest of the week to travel somewhere exotic, take a class, learn another language, etc. The latter you’ve done successfully when you’ve convinced him/her that it’s somehow better for the company!), I don’t think I’ll be using it’s suggestions any time soon.

But…if you read the book, you choose what you’ll apply in your life, and what you’ll skip.

I started thinking about what I wanted to experience.

Not long after reading, I suddenly got bored with getting things & accumulating more “stuff”…stuff that only excites me before, during, and a little bit after purchasing (.i.e., clothes); but more on this later. It’s complicated, as shopping is one of my all time favorite “experiences”.

My focus at the moment, and hopefully it will continue on, is to go & do more, and find those experiences that bring excitement & joy that is more long-term.

One experience that I’m going to share with you here is learning how to ride a bicycle, as an adult!
In the long-term, I see myself riding to the ice cream shop (and taking other leisure bike rides) with Husband, riding for fitness, and maybe even teaching other adults or my little niece (when she gets older) how to ride a bike.

I’m excited & nervous!!!
