I would recommend this book. It was an entertaining, quick read, but not totally satisfying.
Beware! Spoilers up ahead…
The ending felt like a BIG let-down!
I read the last sentence in a hurry, then pressed the tab button to “turn the page”, eagerly expecting to read another chapter, paragraph, something. But, nope! All I got were “acknowledgements”. I even skimmed through those hoping the author had snuck the actual ending in there somewhere. But, I didn’t see anything!
What the heck, man! Where’s the justice? The comeuppance for “Annoying Amy”? I refuse to believe that Nick would put up with her, stay in the marriage, for the sake of a baby. A baby that he didn’t even want?
I think that’s exactly what I said once I finished reading this book. “REALLY?”
In the end, Nick tells Amy that he feels sorry for her. Because, she has to wake up every day, and be her. This isn’t what she wanted to hear (because she has expectations of what her husband should say in her head), and it irritated Amy so much so that she couldn’t get what he said out of her head. She couldn’t get it out of her head…
SOooooo…is this suppose to be her half ounce of (mental) anguish for ALL OF THE GALLONS she’s poured down upon Nick?
There were a few times while reading this book, where it felt like Nick’s perspective didn’t even feel like a man’s perspective. I mean, what man would put up with that?…Before, I didn’t think Nick was crazy, but now I’m starting to think he was a little. I’ve heard that the ending was suppose to mean that “crazy deserves crazy”. That Nick and Amy deserved each other. Well…BOOooo! Nuts to that, I say. I didn’t feel Nick deserved that, at all. By the end I just felt very sorry for him. I thought he was a trapped man. A girlishly trapped man.
His only real explanation (for why he sticks around) is that he likes the way that Amy makes him feel. That any other woman after Amy would just be average/boring? Hmm…sounds like something a girl would say. Lol
There was such a great buildup towards the end–with Nick and Amy back under the same roof, after all that had happened–that I expected an explosive ending. Something that would blow my mind. But, nope!
Ending aside, I did enjoy this one and all the psychological aspects of it (i.e. Nick desperately not wanting to be like his father, Amy and her ideas about being “the cool girl”). Some things were obvious, other’s weren’t. Like, the fact that Nick had a mistress. Didn’t see that one coming! From the get-go, I knew that Nick didn’t kill Amy and that she was still alive.
I like how Amy (in the beginning) kinda poked fun at her girlfriends because, they made the men in their lives do things to prove their love, and that she didn’t need to have Nick prove his love for her (“dancing like a monkey”, or something to that effect). But, in the end, I guess she did.
Or…was that just “Diary Amy”?
