The Boys of My Youth, by Jo Ann Beard
This book is a collection of short stories (real life happenings) from the author’s life.
For a seemingly “quick read”, The Boys of My Youth felt like it took FOREVER to read. By Chapter 5, I was ready to abandon the whole thing!
Some of the stories felt slow, underwhelming, and a bit laborious to read. “Coyotes” (although beautifully written) was especially underwhelming and laborious to read. I kept putting the book down, pondering whether I should dedicate any more time to it. All the while, reminding myself that this is someone’s life. Not “fiction”.
I’m glad I continued reading because, “The Fourth State of Matter” was definitely a page-turner! I had a hard time falling asleep that night because, I kept feeling the compulsion to Google what happened there. Shocking!
I enjoy reading short stories but, this book, overall, was just “okay” for me.
From the title, I initially expected the book to be mostly, if not completely, about “The Boys”. It was not. A good chunk of it was about Beard’s family members, her life growing up, friendship and marital situations. This wasn’t a huge problem for me. I just found myself wishing the stories were told in order of time, faster, and with a more straight-forward (less poetic) tone.
Eh…maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this one.
Did you read this book? What did you think?
