How often do you clean/organize your closet?
I usually organize mine during the Spring and Fall seasons but, I couldn’t remember the last time I gave it a good clean. It was a disorganized, dusty mess.
Cleaning it felt so overwhelming that it took several attempts, on several different days, across several different weeks just to start!
I’d move a couple shirts around one day. Line up a pair or two of shoes on the floor on another. Pull a wool skirt to pack away for next Fall…each instance would occur just before pulling the doors shut and walking away.
I was procrastinating BIG TIME!
Until, one day, I took the closet doors off the hinges.
After tossing out a bunch of junk, I moved everything else out of the closet to vacuum and wipe down the walls.
As I started to put things back, I remembered a nifty idea that I’d seen awhile ago on Jen’s blog.
Using a bookcase for shoe organization!
I loved the idea and remembered that we had an old one in the living room. It was suppose to be thrown out last Spring. Ugh. Why is getting rid of stuff so hard? I did not assign any “sentimental value” to that bookcase, and yet, it never made it to the trash.
Any way, I measured the bookcase before moving it, and found that it would work just fine.
I like it.
It’s true that once you truly get started, you’ll feel inspired to do more.
Now, I want to:
- Find a nice area rug to put down.
- Get rid of a boat-load of clothes.
- Clean & condition my leather goods. I’ve been slacking, especially with shoe care.
- Maybe add a large mirror and a little chair/bench right outside the closet area…
Even if none of that happens, MAN it feels so good to have this much done with the closet!
I’m thinking of leaving the doors off. Husband and I can now both get to our sides of the closet easier, and simultaneously. Plus, it makes the room feel more spacious.
