I’m so sad!
It’s been three days since I’ve had anything to eat with flour in it.
I never really thought about this kitchen staple of mine being made from “wheat”. Then again, I’ve never had to.
My allergy test results revealed that I have a wheat allergy. It’s nothing severe, but I’m allergic nonetheless.
I’m also allergic to corn, rye, egg, orange, string bean, potato, peanuts, salmon, tuna and shrimp.
Cats & dogs too.
What puzzles me about my test results is that I’ve never experienced an allergic reaction/episode to oranges, eggs, or corn. Or any type of bread, for that matter.
My fingers itch occasionally when I peel potatoes, and my nose becomes a bit twitchy when I cook shrimp or make tuna salad. But, I can eat them just fine. No itchy throat. No lumpy bumps. No swelling, or irritation.
My mom reminded me that I tend to sneeze around flour but, I think flour is kind of like pepper. When it’s in the air, it just makes you sneeze, no?
Maybe I’m in denial.
Salmon & peanuts were no surprise. Just the smell of them makes me sick. I can’t be in the house where salmon, or any kind of fishy fish is being cooked in the kitchen. I also can’t be in the vicinity of a person/persons cracking &/or eating peanuts, for too long.
My doctor suggested I stay clear of the foods (on my allergy test results) for 2 weeks. Then, binge for 1 week on 1 item. Although the external skin test was positive & clear, I’ve been having some internal (GI) issues. So, we’re looking at what I eat. Since I don’t consume any of the aforementioned foods regularly, minus wheat, corn, egg, and potatoes, those are the main ones I’m focusing on.
It’s frustrating. Some of these foods…I’ve gone my entire life eating. Without much trouble.
This really, REALLY blows.
Somebody slip me a piece of bread. Please! I’m dying here!
Seriously. I’m running out of dinner ideas. We can only eat so much rice, and salad.
Pasta. Bread. Potatoes. Products containing corn. I realize now, of course, that these are major ingredients in most of our dinners.
I make them all the time for my family. I don’t really mind, but it’d be so much easier if we all ate the same things.
I remember growing up, “special orders” didn’t exist, at home. You ate exactly what Dad or Mom prepared. And, that was it! Until you were old enough to cook. Then, you cooked for everyone else. And…I think that was where the special orders started. Ha!
Husband doesn’t eat mushrooms, or shrimp. So, when I make chicken cacciatore (which is suppose to be a one-pot meal), I cook the ever-so-delicious mushrooms on the side. To me, they make the dish. It makes me a little sad that he’ll never appreciate ‘shrooms (or fried jumbo shrimp) but, I know he feels the exact same about me, with fish & peanuts.
He doesn’t eat fish or peanuts (around me), and I don’t eat shrimp (around him). Except when it’s been too long. We schedule it then. A night out to eat. We kiss before our entrees come to the table. After dinner, we stay away from each other.
Do you make “special orders” when you’re doing the cooking?
What food sacrifices do you make for the ones you love?
