Can shampoo/conditioner expire?
I pulled some old Mizani shampoo & conditioner from the back of the cabinet (I think I’ve had them for about 3 years. Eek!). They appeared “safe” to use, and had no weird smell, so…
I straightened my hair with them.

4-STEP PRE FLAT-IRON PROCESS
- Shampoo’d with Mizani Thermasmooth Shampoo.
- Deep conditioned with Mizani Thermasmooth Conditioner (15-20 minutes).
- Rinsed clean. My hair felt very soft, stretched, and moisturized. It also had a bit of a sheen.
- Blow dried, after misting with Fantasia Heat Protector.

Before flat-ironing, I applied a dab of Fekkai Glossing Cream. To flat-iron, I just segmented 1-inch sections of hair, clasped at the root, pulled, and when I came to the last inch or so of hair, I twisted the iron to curl the ends.
I need a smaller flat iron. My hair toward the back is too short to clasp between the plates.

Not sure what to do with these sides. ‘Cept shave them off more.
I brushed them down with a soft boar bristle hairbrush.

My hair felt good. Soft & bouncy. I liked it.
Until…

…24 (well, less than 24) hours later. More like 19.
It felt icky and coated with product.
My hair made me feel like yesterday’s efforts were all for naught.
Boo.
How long does your straightened (naturally curly) hair last?
What techniques/products do you use to maintain the look & prevent reverting?

that’s a bummer…it looks so cute, though! i always love my hair right after i do it, and then about 2 hours later, it looks and feels heavy and coated!
Thank you.
Just 2 hours…wow!
Mine doesn’t last long at all, maybe a day or two. I usually do updo’s and pinups with it for that reason. I love your results and have heard great things about the Mizani thermasmooth line, it’s on my buy list.
Thanks! I tried wearing a bun the next day, but the back layers were too short to fit in. LOL
I loved Thermasmooth, especially when during the transitioning stages.
o dang that sux it didn’t last. i hate when i spend 2+ hrs doing my hair and it just doesn’t turn out right so i feel your frustration. it was pretty while it lasted.
Thanks Simplychic! It’s definitely frustrating. That’s why some times, I don’t bother. LOL
I love your curly hair! I rarely straighten mine, but when I do it really only lasts about 24 hours at most before it starts curling up again. I haven’t found any products that make it last longer!
Thanks Megan!
Your hair looks so great flat-ironed! I also really like the shaved sides, it’s good a mix of edginess and femininity. Super unfortunate it didn’t last that long. I have yet to attempt flat ironing my curls, mostly because I think I need to get an actual professional trim, it would be all sorts of crazy different lengths if I straightened it out now, haha!

Thanks Ashlei!
unfortunally for me it only lasts a few hours if maybe 8( hopefully it is not windy, raining or any other thing) oh and forget sleeping! i hate to get mine done at hairdresser for my soft curls not to last when i get home. the last time i got my hair pressed out I was so excited to show my husband my new due for it to have fallen by the time i reached him. he was appauled at the amount to money and time I had spent on it to look that way it did. so keep it simple with my twists. thanks for sharing
Aww man…that sucks. You said he was “appalled”. LOL Thank you for sharing!
Wow!! Loving the hair!! I miss my hair! Asked for a trim and walked out with a cut. I was so sad! Its just hair ( I know) it will grow back. You look great. Keep up the good work. Love Love your blog!!

Thanks so much Ingrid!
You’re saying, that that fabulous cut you have now was a mistake?! Or, did you get it cut again recently?
My flat irons usually last until I wash (2 weeks). I use the comb chase method and Sabino Moisture Blok.
Your hair is fabulous by the way, both straight and curly!
Thanks Savvy! I must look into the moisture block…
I love that you switch things up with straight hair. I straightened my hair a few weeks ago. It lasted 4 days. No heat damage. The smallest bit of moisture had it looking a little poofy – that works when it’s longer, but not when it’s short like ours IMO. I still loved the versatility of having the straight-hair look…I just wish it lasted longer.
Thanks Monique!
Makes sense that shorter hair doesn’t stay as straight as long hair would. I didn’t think of that. 4 days is pretty good though. Did you use any special products?
Yeh, I was pleased with 4 days since I didn’t pay anything for it
. I didn’t use any products after I applied the heat protectant prior to blowdrying, and a dime of coconut oil prior to applying the ceramic. I find that less product is more. I did keep my hair tied down whenever I was home though.
Sweet, thanks!
