Real Books V.S. Readers, Book Rooms & Dating Yourself + A Library Haul.

library books sale

Real books, or electronic readersWhich do you prefer?

We have a Kindle and, I think it’s great. But. Whenever I’ve read books on it, I missed holding a real book. Turning actual pages.

Something about it feels…I don’t know. Nostalgic?

I can’t explain it.

library books for sale

So. I took myself out on a pretty hot date, to the library. There’s usually a sale going on, and I like finding books that I’d been wanting to read. Perusing new titles, then looking them up on my phone for online reviews, is also pretty enjoyable. But, I have to be careful I don’t too read too much. Spoilers.

I still like the idea of having a book room in our future home. But, collecting enough (good) books to line the shelves of several floor-to-ceiling bookcases seems impossible.

Do you take yourself out on dates? If so, to where?

Whether it’s to the library, thrift store, coffee shop, museum…I quite like the idea of “dating oneself”.

boys of my youth book

My afternoon ended with good coffee, and two “new” books.

The Feeling Good Handbook, by David D. Burns, M.D.
The Boys of My Youth, by Jo Ann Beard

Not bad for $1.25. No tax. :)

  1. My local library doesn’t sell books, unless I missed that part. You make me want to go in there now just to check and see. I enjoy my iPad Kindle app for my books but I’m like you and do miss having a physical book. I’ve actually considered buying the actual book of the ones that I truly enjoy on my Kindle. That could get expensive but I might do it.

  2. I prefer the books you can hold onto – plus when I read things on electronic devices for too long my eyes strain (maybe its just me) … I don’t get the same problem with ‘real’ books (& I have good eyesight). Oh + about dating oneself – I never thought of that – but it seems I’ve been doing it for a long time – especially on shopping trips :)

  3. I have a Kindle and yes, I miss regular books. I’m in a book club and it’s kind of hard to follow along with the group because my device doesn’t show page numbers like regular books. But I’ll live. Because I refuse to NOT use my Kindle because I paid $200 bucks for it! :)
As far as “dating” myself. I usually take a day off of work (randomly) and clean the house, go shopping (I only buy things for myself) and cook a really big dinner for my hubby and daughter . That’s a good time as far as I’m concerned because I going at my own pace.

  4. I prefer to have both the audio & book in hand when possible. I have a Kindle that I never use. As far as dating myself goes, I do that often. I usually treat my self to lunch on the pier twice a week.

    • Lunch on the pier sound lovely. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to an audio book. It’s something I’d like to try though. :)

      • I’m currently learning Spanish via audio books. My friends & I swap audio books via drop box all the time. I’m able to listen while I drive & workout. The local library and thrift stores are my best friend when it comes to books.

  5. I looove books. Currently I’m reading the 5th book in the Game of Thrones series titled A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin. I definitely date myself by catching great museum exhibits or a basic trip to the library.

  6. I have not yet been able to do eReaders! I love love love books. I’ve bought two Kindle books to read on my computer but I notice that after a few minutes, I give up on it. I also have a couple of digital magazine subscriptions and again, I find I don’t read them as much the print mags. I go to the library every Wednesday and love checking out new books. My friends and I also have a book swap party every 6 months or so.

  7. Hi Marie,

Does your blog have a goodreads account? I’d love to see and share good reading recommendations with you there.

    • Hi Xenia! No. But, I do love reading reviews there. Again, I have to be careful not to read the spoilers. For now, I will share any book recommendations here. Feel free to inbox me yours. Thanks for commenting! :)

paperback/hardback, REAL books. Any little old book store i come across I am on it. And when looking for something in specific I will head over to Barnes&Noble. I’ve tried reading a book on my ipad…and…it’s just no fun…

taking myself on a date sounds nice…i should word it that way, maybe i will have a better time when i have to go run errands…I’m more of a homebody if alone. i prefer to do stuff with others.

Right now I’m reading The Arabian Nights, and I am loving it…its a gorgeous book too, whenever i have it out it gets compliments. I like having rows of various sized books of various decorations and themes. It adds life to my living room, and i get to share my books with others..you cant really do that with the ipad/kindle…well, its not the same at all.

    • Hey GorgeousGab! I feel you. I found a little used book store within driving distance from me & I wish it was within walking distance. Because, I’d visit often. :) I totally agree that books add something special to the home! I must look up that book title now, as you’ve just piqued my design interest. Thanks!

  9. I love reading real books. I am currently reading The Yeast Connection. I use the Bible on my iPad at church. I don’t never really thought about dating myself. I do go to the library and peruse alone. My husband and I have had date nights at the library before. I used to do audio books when I was in high school and worked in a factory. I tried recently and kept getting distracted or walking out of the room.

  10. I just love hangin’ in bookstores and I work at the library outside of Chicago and I am in grad school for library science. I grew up around books! To me there are some books that have a very cool cover that I just have to get my hands on. There are others I could just load on my e-reader. Funny thing, my idea of a date with someone would end up at a bookstore browsing through classics or glossy mags from other countries… I think you can tell a lot from a person by the books they are reading.

  11. I love them both. I find that although I love my iPad, I rarely use it for certain types of books… like my resource stuff like my Chicago Manual of Style that I keep next to me at all times when editing books.

For magazines, however, I absolutely love that they are compactly stored on my iPad and I can look back at old issues without the clutter in my home.

Technology always has it’s place but the old school girl in me will always have printed books at home.
