Everyone has their favorite brands to cook with, no?! Here are my top 5. I find myself buying them over & over again, and I especially love using them when preparing dinner.
- Better Than Bouillon, Chicken Base
I use this in soups, sauces, and whenever a recipe calls for chicken bouillon/stock. This base is very fresh, has a pleasant chicken flavor, and is easy to use (no waiting for cubes to dissolve). This thick paste blends pretty quickly when stirred in boiling hot water.
- Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil
I LOVE this EVOO! I can’t really explain it, but this olive oil tastes pure. I’ve tried other brands, and they all had unpleasant flavors. Not good for cooking, or making salad dressings.
- Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard
I don’t really cook with this, but I love using it as an emulsifier in homemade salad dressings. I especially like it in this fresh, honey mustard sauce. YUM!
- Drogheria Alimentari Organic Black Peppercorns
It’s hard to find a dinner recipe that doesn’t call for seasoning with black pepper. I’m not sure if the “organic” label means anything, but I love this brand because the peppercorns (which surprisingly lasts a long while) come in a little grinder. It’s easy to crank; and the peppercorns deliver big on fresh, black pepper flavor (before using a mill, I didn’t know black pepper could have a flavor)! The heat/spiciness is secondary.
- Kikkoman Panko Crumbs
Deep-frying in the kitchen is always a mess; then, there’s the question of what to do with the huge pan of oil…and then, there’s the concern about health. I LOVE Panko bread crumbs, because they give me the texture…that “crunchiness” that I miss from delicious, deep-fried foods. When combined with spices/cheeses/other bread crumbs, Panko works really well in “crusting” or battering meats/poultry/fish. It’s even awesome on the bottom of homemade pizza crust!
