Dressing for your body type can be challenging, especially if you’re shorter than the average woman. Dresses & skirts can sometimes swallow you whole, diminishing your figure; especially if your figure is petite.
If you’re looking for a few quick tips to accentuate your frame & are unsure of where to start, read on!
Since we’ve already covered pants & denim (click here, if you missed it), lets discuss dresses & skirts…
• Opt for a Shorter Hem
Something that hits a little above the knee works best.
If you want to go shorter (& the weather is cool enough), pull on a pair of stockings or tights.
If it’s warm & you’re feeling extra “leggy”, go even shorter & wear a longer sleeved top that covers your chest; this adds a very lovely balance. No need to be “booby” & “leggy” at the same time, unless that is what you’re going for.
• Belt, Tie, or Cinch
Look for dresses & skirts that accent your waist.
Wrap dresses are virtually universal & especially great for this. Skirts that have belts, elastic bands, or that are “tie-waist” look great. If they don’t come with these things, just throw on a skinny belt.
Have you heard the rule about keeping prints smaller than your fist size?
It is said that larger prints & bold patterns can overwhelm smaller figures.
I’m not a major print/pattern fan, but when I am feeling “printy”; the patterns are usually small. Perhaps subconsciously, I have followed this rule. Nothing wrong with that. The rule does work (because it adds this effortless balance via your unique proportions), but I’d like to think that bigger & bolder can be worn well by petite women. It all depends on how a certain lady wears it, no?
Don’t be afraid to test the “rules”. Try on prints & patterns that catch your eye (no matter the size) & see how they look & feel on you!
